Nickels

 

Grade Level: Kindergarten
Objectives:
  • tell the students to identify a nickel and its value.
  • tell the students to name the president found on the nickel.
  • tell the students to identify how many pennies are in a nickel.
Materials:
  • nickels
  • KeeBook
  •  software, Portraits of American Presidents
  • chart
Preparation:
  • get chart paper
  • get Keebook set up and software ready to go on the computer
  • get enough nickels for each student
Activities:
  • Review from yesterday about pennies
  • Pass out nickels...ask how many pennies make a nickel?  So, how much is a nickel worth?  (Show this on chart paper with actual money)
  • Together, count by 5's.  Put several nickels together and see how much money each group has
  • Look closely at the president on the nickel...who is it?
  • Look at the Keebook about the nickel and the president.
  • Look at the section on the software about Thomas Jefferson.
Evaluation:
  • Can you count by fives?
  • Do you know how many pennies are in a nickel?
  • Do you know what a nickel is worth?
  • Could you tell me three things about Thomas Jefferson?
Follow-up:
  • Individually ask each student the same evaluation questions listed above to check for their level of understanding of the concepts. 
  • Continue to review pennies and nickels each day.
